Guidelines for Submission

Blind Beggar Press, Inc. is a non-profit, alternative publishing company interested in works by People of Color. We publish poetry, plays, short stories, novels, artwork & photography, children's literature, and critical/non-fiction works which speak to the needs of our ethnic populations.

We are interested in quality work which shows a wedding of craft and content. We are not interested in "art for art's sake", but "art for people's sakes." To that end, we ask that you adhere to the following quidelines when submitting work:

  1. Five to 10 samples of poetry or one to three short stories or plays. Novels should include a maximum of three chapters, including the first and last ones.

  2. Artwork and photos should be a maximum of six samplnees with the name and address on the back of each one.

  3. Include a cover letter with a brief bio.

  4. Prose should be on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper double spaced. Computer diskettes should be 3 1/2" in WordPerfect or MsWord or IBM or compatible platform only.

  5. Replies are given in five to eight weeks, if an SASE is enclosed with sufficient postage. Work submitted without an SASE will NOT be returned.

  6. For work included in anthologies, two free copies are provided with a discount for additional issues. For individual volumes, we pay authors with copies to be determined during the contractual process.

  7. We will consider "vanity publishing," wherein the authors pays for the publication, IF the work meets our regular statndards. Inquiry letters should be sent with samples as indicated above.

  8. All authors and artists retain the individual copyrights to their original work.

 

Goals and Objectives

  1. To provide professional guidance and direction to emerging writers and artists in the areas of publishing, technique, style, copyrighting, printing and incorporation.
  2. To develop workshops, lectures, demonstrations, technical guidance and assistance with public relations.
  3. To provide vehicles and occasion for writers and artists to present their work in quality publications and performances
  4. To accelerate the careers of writers and artists and promote them to the widest possible audiences.
  5. To provide an organization where writers and artists can share ideas, visions and develop a support network.
  6. To produce quality work in publications that speak to the needs, visions and concerns of People of Colour.

Going Forward

The Company looks forward to having even more impact on the communities it serves through the development of relevant, entertaining and educational projects and products. BLIND BEGGAR PRESS also expects to become a significant force in publishing by People of Colour in the United States and internationally. We have a commitment to our communities and provide not only publishing services, but readings, workshops and free consultations to writers and artists. All of these activities will be expanded upon and enhanced in an effort to continue providing quality publications and services to as wide an audience as possible.
