Blind Beggar Press, Inc. is one of only two independent presses owned and operated by people of colour that has survived from the 1970's.  When we started in 1977, the co-founders, Gary Johnston and C.D. Grant were college students and idealists who wanted to “make a difference.”  We never imagined that, 35 years later, the publishing company would become a pioneer in grass roots literature.  We now hold the distinction of having published over 300 writers and artists, known and unknown.  Our publications have had an impact on a wide national (and increasingly international) audience which includes thousands of readers from youth to seniors, political prisoners to church goers, and the LGBT community to college professors, and beyond. Now, WE NEED YOUR HELP to continue.

The mission of Blind Beggar Press is to provide literature and art to as wide an audience as possible in an effort to promote quality artistic creativity and its creators.  We support the struggles against racism and inequality, illiteracy, poverty, and we believe in human rights for all, especially those who have been traditionally disenfranchised.  We believe our work is needed now more than ever in face of the injustices which take place on a daily basis throughout our communities. We’ve been successful at meeting our mission for the past 35 years and we want to continue serving our communities into the future.

In addition to publishing, we offer free workshops for aspiring artists and writers, special multi-media programs and activities for the general public at little on no cost, and our publications are always affordable (in addition to the free donations we provide to non-profit organizations).  Our staff and Board of Directors are all volunteers.  We have no paid administrative staff and hire artists at fair rates for various services.  Eighty-five to ninety percent of what we bring in from sales is used to continue publishing and offering these services.

We can only continue our work with your help.  As we celebrate our three-decade legacy throughout 2012, your contribution will enable us to keep doing what we do best–act as a voice for people who otherwise might not have an outlet and encourage our youth to put their energies into creative endeavors. Please join the many authors, artists, businesses and other supporters who are helping us to ensure the future of BBP by pledging your support today. Donations of any amount are welcome. All contributors will be acknowledged during the course of this celebratory year at our events.

Checks can be made out and sent to Blind Beggar Press, Inc., P.O. Box 437, Williamsbridge Station, Bronx, NY 10467.  You can also donate using PayPal on this website. THANK YOU!
